Drunk driving in Oklahoma is a challenging problem

Drunk driving laws were put into place to try to make the roads safer for everyone who uses them. In Oklahoma, the number of fatalities attributed to drunk driving crashes is higher than the rate of the nation as a whole. Yet, only 1.8% of Oklahomans report that they drive after drinking too much. This is just shy of the 1.69% of people nationally that report the same thing.

There are approximately 5.6 deaths per 100,000 population in the state. The national rate was 3.3 fatalities per 100,000 population. These fatalities, coupled with the injuries that come from these wrecks, are the reason why strong action against drunk drivers is necessary. Unfortunately, this means that individuals who are accused of drunk driving do face a difficult journey through the legal system.

There are many ways that states try to manage the problem of drunk drivers on the roads. These were made with the right intent, to save lives; however, this also means that adults will sometimes have to deal with hassles from the police trying to arrest them.

Some of the ways states attempt to control drunk driving is to impose strict penalties for people who get convicted of drunk driving. These can include time in jail, steep fines, having to use an ignition interlock, losing your driver's license and having to do community service.

If you are stopped on suspicion of drunk driving, you need to keep your wits about you. After the encounter with police, jot down some quick notes about what happened because some points might be useful in your defense. You must explore all of the possibilities if you are going to have a defense that reflects your best interests.
