The booming medical marijuana industry in Oklahoma

While recreational marijuana is still illegal in Oklahoma, it has recently been noted that the medical marijuana program is flourishing. Our state is largely conservative, which accounts for the strong opposition of adding a recreational availability for residents.

At the end of last year, there were around 25,000 patients who were registered for medical marijuana. Currently, there are around 210,000 patients registered. That’s a sharp jump for only a year. One thing that’s being credited with the success of the program is the wide availability of it. Unlike some other states, the laws in Oklahoma are set to benefit the users and the suppliers.

A person’s doctor can recommend this drug for any condition they feel warrants it. Some states have limits on the conditions that qualify, but Oklahoma didn’t set those. This enables the patient and the doctor to make care decisions based on the unique circumstances of the case.

When it comes to the suppliers and sellers, the laws are turned in their favor. Municipalities can’t enact restrictions on zoning that would make it impossible for dispensaries to open. There is also no cap on the number of business licenses that can be given out for dispensaries.

Not only does the introduction of the state’s medical-marijuana program benefit the people who enter into the business and those who use it. It is also boosting the economy. The 16% tax patients pay has injected $34.5 million in tax dollars into the state as of the end of September 2019.

People who are found with marijuana without a medical-marijuana license, and those who have more than the quantity they are licensed to have, can face criminal charges. These can be very serious, working on your defense right away is critical.
