Marijuana charges may lead to drug court participation

Some people consider drug charges related to marijuana minor; however, a conviction on these charges can have a significant impact on your life. There are a few ways that you can address these, but each one has to be considered carefully because they all serve different purposes.

One option that some people have when they are facing marijuana charges is to go through the drug court program. This is a court-supervised program that helps to address the underlying cause of the addiction, helps the person to attain sobriety, gives them to tools to remain sober, yet still face some punishment for their criminal actions.

As part of the program, you have to go through a drug treatment program and maintain sobriety throughout your time in drug court. This is checked through random drug tests. There is also a requirement to find a job, which might prove to be a challenge due to the time required to work through the drug court program. When you are searching for a job, be sure to be honest with potential employers about your need to take time off.

The alternatives to drug court are to go through a trial or accept a plea deal. Remember that marijuana possession charges are usually a misdemeanor the first time and come with a potential incarceration of up to 12 months. Any subsequent offense has an incarceration period of 2 to 10 years, and it is considered a felony charge. On top of the time behind bars, you may also have to pay fines.

It is always best to explore all the options you have for your defense strategy. This can help you to set a clear plan. You should think about how each one will impact your life when considering what you are going to do.
