Oklahoma County trial goes forward after rape defendant fails to show up

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

On the fourth day of his child rape trial, the defendant, Kent G. Savage, didn’t show up.

Oklahoma County District Judge Don Deason went ahead Thursday morning with testimony anyway.

Savage never came to court. Later Thursday, jurors convicted Savage of sexual offenses against three girls.

Now, authorities are searching for Savage, 48. Prosecutor Jimmy Harmon said he may have fled to Utah.

His attorney, Joe Ruffin, said: “He had been seeing counselors. I was trying to work out a deal with the DA’s office, but they just want to throw the key away on these people.”

About fleeing, the defense attorney said: “He’s not supposed to do that, but I can understand as a human being why he’d do it. You know. I’m sworn to uphold the law and I can’t condone that kind of behavior, but I probably would have done the same thing.”

In his absence, Savage was convicted of 10 counts of lewd acts with a child, two counts of rape by instrumentation and two counts of exhibiting obscene material to a child. Jurors chose punishments totaling 186 years and two life terms. The judge ordered that Savage serve the sentences consecutively.

Savage, an insurance company executive, had been out on bail. He was listed as living in Edmond when he was charged last year. He had deposited $94,000 in a bank and given control of the account to a bail bond company in order to stay free, records show.
