Oklahoma City man chases cabdriver with pocket knife police say

Friday, July 1st, 2011

An Oklahoma City man was arrested after a cabdriver was chased with a pocketknife at a convenience store, police said.

A clerk at the 7-Eleven at Hefner Road and Pennsylvania Avenue called police to report a cabdriver was being chased by a man with a knife about 11:15 p.m. Thursday, according to an Oklahoma City police report.

Bernard Leslie Fortner, 53, was arrested on a complaint of assault with a dangerous weapon and a city warrant on destruction of property.

The cabdriver told police he was dispatched to the convenience store to pick up a fare and when he arrived, he asked a man if he had called for a cab.

The man told him he had not and that the driver needed to get away from him.

When the cabdriver phoned the callback number for the fare, the same man answered his cellphone and told the cabdriver he did need a cab, then told the driver again to get away from him, the police report states.

The man then reportedly pulled out a pocketknife and “flipped” the blade out.

The driver went back to his cab, but the man chased him around the vehicle.

When the driver tried to shut the door, the man grabbed it, according to the police report.

The man held the knife at eye level and yelled at the driver, then slammed the driver’s side door and went to sit down on the ledge by the door of the store, police said.

Fortner remained in the Oklahoma County jail Monday.
